The Land and the People
Bundeli weddings are held in the Bundelkhand region of central India. This region covers parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Towns like Jhansi, Banda, Orchha, Sagar, Chhatarpur and Tikamgarh are part of it. The land is dry and rocky, but it is full of old forts, temples and rivers.
The people speak Bundeli and follow North Indian Hindu customs. The region is known for its brave history and folk songs. The story of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi is a proud part of the region’s past. The people are known to be simple, strong and warm-hearted.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A Bundeli wedding usually takes three to five days. Preparations in the home start many days before. Relatives arrive early, and the women begin to make sweets and snacks. The house is decorated, and the drums and songs begin.
Before the Wedding
The wedding starts with Tilak and engagement. In this ceremony, the families meet, and the bride’s side puts a tilak on the forehead of the groom. Gifts and sweets are exchanged. The families also fix the wedding date with the help of a priest.
Haldi is applied to the bride and groom in their own homes. Women rub the turmeric paste on the bride and groom with songs and laughter. This ritual is believed to bring beauty and good luck to the couple. Neighbours and relatives join in the fun, and the mood is very happy.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, the groom comes with a Barat, riding a horse or traveling in a car. The Barat has music and dance, and the friends of the groom dance in front of the horse. The bride’s family welcomes him with Dwar Puja and Aarti. In Aarti, a lamp is waved before the groom, and prayers are said to keep him safe. The bride’s mother puts a tilak on the groom’s forehead.
The couple exchanges garlands, and then the priest does Kanyadaan. In Kanyadaan, the bride’s father gives his daughter to the groom with prayers. This is a very emotional moment for the bride’s parents. They take the pheras around the holy fire, and each round is a promise. The groom applies sindoor on the bride to show that she is now his wife. The wedding ends with the Vidai ceremony. The bride leaves her parents’ home, and the family says goodbye with tears and blessings.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride wears a red or bright-coloured sari or lehenga, with gold jewelry. Her hands are decorated with henna and bangles. The groom wears a sherwani or a kurta with a turban. The turban gives him a royal look, and many grooms carry a sword or a small decoration in the turban.
Food, Music and Fun
Women sing Bundeli folk songs and dance during the celebrations. The songs are often about family, love and brave heroes. Some songs are teasing songs that make the groom’s family laugh. The wedding feast includes puri, vegetables and sweets like laddoo. The food is simple but tasty, and it is served with love. A Bundeli wedding reflects the brave spirit and warm heart of the people of Bundelkhand.
