CKP weddings follow Marathi customs with some special community traditions. The community is known for its love of food, art and education. Many CKP families are also known for their beautiful homes and their lively parties. A CKP wedding is a happy mix of old customs and modern style.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A CKP wedding is often shorter than many other Indian weddings. It usually takes one to two days. The main ceremony is held in a few hours, and the rest of the time is spent on family dinners and small functions.
Before the Wedding
The engagement is called Sakhar Puda, where both families exchange gifts and sweets. The word Sakhar means sugar, and it is a sign of sweet words and a sweet future. The bride’s family gives a sari and sweets to the groom’s family, and the groom’s family does the same for the bride.
Before the wedding, the families hold special dinners called Kelvan. Kelvan is a big meal held at home for close relatives. The bride’s or groom’s family invites relatives, and they all eat together. The meal is rich, and it is a time for friends and family to meet and give blessings.
The bride and groom have a Haldi ceremony in their own homes. The women apply turmeric paste on the bride and groom and sing songs. The day is full of fun. The mood is bright and happy.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, the bride’s family welcomes the groom in a ritual called Simant Pujan. In this ritual, the bride’s parents greet the groom at the door and worship him as a special guest. They wash his feet, put a tilak on his forehead and give him gifts. The groom’s mother is also honoured in this ritual.
A cloth, called an Antarpat, is held between the couple at the start of the main ceremony. The cloth keeps them from seeing each other until the right time. The priests chant mantras. When the cloth is pulled away, the couple sees each other, and the guests throw rice on the couple. The rice is a symbol of good luck and plenty.
The groom ties the Mangalsutra, which is a sacred necklace of black and gold beads. It is a symbol of marriage. The couple then takes seven steps around the sacred fire. Each step is a promise for their life together. The wedding ends with the bride’s farewell and a welcome at the groom’s home.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride wears a traditional sari, and the groom wears a dhoti-kurta or a sherwani with a turban. The bride often wears a Paithani or a nine-yard sari. She wears gold jewelry, and the traditional green bangles. The groom’s dress is neat and simple, and it suits the calm and graceful mood of the wedding.
Food, Music and Fun
The wedding feast is loved by all guests. The CKP community is known for its fine food, and the feast is a big part of the fun. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food may be served, depending on the family. The dishes are often rich and tasty, and they are prepared with special spices. Sweets are served at the end. The atmosphere is full of laughter, music and warm greetings. A CKP wedding is a delightful blend of tradition, food and fellowship.
