The Land and the People
Goan Christian weddings are held in Goa, on the west coast of India. Goa is known for its beaches, old churches and a relaxed way of life. Many Goan Christians also live in Mumbai, Karnataka, the Gulf countries and Europe. The Portuguese ruled Goa for a long time, and this has left a deep mark on the food, the music and the customs of the people.
The weddings follow Catholic church traditions along with local Goan customs. Music, dance and food are a big part of these weddings. The Goans are famous for their love of parties, and a wedding is one of the biggest parties of all.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A Goan Christian wedding usually takes two to three days. The main church wedding is held on one day. The other days are for small functions and family gatherings. Some families also hold a party a few days before the wedding.
Before the Wedding
The wedding starts with a ceremony called Roce, held one or two days before the wedding. In the Roce, the bride and groom are bathed in coconut milk. The coconut milk is poured on them by family and friends. They are also given a small drink or a snack. The Roce is a happy and playful ceremony, and there is a lot of laughter and singing.
Their family and friends sing songs and bless them. The songs are lively and often funny. The songs are sung in Konkani, the language of Goa. The bride and groom are blessed for a long and happy married life. The Roce is a special custom of Goa, and it is one of the best-loved parts of the wedding.
The church announces the wedding plans in advance, which is called reading the banns. The priest reads out the names of the couple at the church on a few Sundays. This is done so that anyone who knows of a reason why the couple should not marry can speak up. It also lets the whole community know about the wedding.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, the couple exchanges vows and rings in the church. The bride walks up the aisle with her father, and the groom waits at the altar. Family and friends fill the church. The mood is peaceful and holy.
The priest blesses the couple during the mass. He talks about love, faith and a happy home. The couple promises to love and care for each other for life. The church choir sings, and the guests join the prayers.
After the church service, guests go to the reception. The couple cuts a wedding cake, and the guests raise a toast. Toasts are speeches by friends and family, and each one wishes the couple happiness. Guests enjoy live music, dance and a big meal.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride wears a white gown, and the groom wears a suit. The bride often carries a bouquet of flowers. She wears a veil and simple jewelry, such as a pearl necklace or small earrings. The groom’s suit is neat and elegant. The bridesmaids and groomsmen also dress well.
Food, Music and Fun
Goan sweets like bebinca are served. Bebinca is a rich layered cake made of coconut milk, eggs and sugar. Popular dishes are pork sorpotel, fish curry and rice. Sorpotel is a spicy and tangy pork dish that many Goans love. There is also a wide choice of cakes and desserts. The band plays popular songs and Goan folk tunes, and the guests dance until late at night. A Goan Christian wedding is a merry party of faith, family and music.
