The Land and the People
Goan Hindu weddings are held by Hindu families in Goa. Many Goan Hindus also live in Maharashtra, Karnataka and other parts of India. Goa is a small state with a big mix of cultures. The Hindus of Goa have their own temples, festivals and customs. Their way of life is close to the sea, the fields and the old villages.
The customs are close to Konkani and Maharashtrian traditions. The weddings are often held in a temple hall or at home. The mood is calm, holy and full of family love. The rituals are simple, and the elders play a big part in guiding the family.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A Goan Hindu wedding usually takes one to three days. The main rituals are often finished in one day. Small functions are held before and after the wedding. The families keep the schedule flexible, and they decide the plan together.
Before the Wedding
The wedding begins with a formal engagement of the families. The families meet, exchange gifts and sweets, and agree on the match. A priest checks the horoscopes and picks a lucky date. The families believe that a good time will bring a happy marriage.
Before the wedding, the bride and groom have a Haldi ceremony at their homes. Turmeric paste is applied to their skin. Women sing folk songs during these days. The songs speak of love, family and the joy of marriage. The women dance and share sweets. It is a warm and cheerful time.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, the groom is welcomed by the bride’s family with a special puja. The bride’s parents greet the groom at the gate, and they put a tilak on his forehead. They also wave a lamp before him to keep away evil. The groom is led into the hall with respect.
The couple exchanges garlands, and a cloth is held between them. The cloth hides them from each other until the right moment. The priest chants mantras. When the cloth is removed, the couple looks at each other, and the guests shower them with rice.
The priest chants mantras, and the groom ties the Mangalsutra. The Mangalsutra is a sacred necklace with black beads and gold. It is the main symbol of marriage for a Hindu bride. The couple takes seven steps around the sacred fire. In each step, they make a promise of love and loyalty. After the wedding, the bride is welcomed at the groom’s home. The family gives her sweets and blessings.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride wears a traditional sari and gold jewelry. Her sari is often silk, with a rich border. She also wears bangles, a necklace and a small nose ring. The groom wears a dhoti and a shirt, or a sherwani. He may also wear a shawl and a small cap. Both the bride and groom dress in a simple and graceful way.
Food, Music and Fun
The feast is often served on banana leaves. Guests sit in rows, and the food is served in a fixed order. Depending on the family, it can be vegetarian or include fish curry. Rice, dal, vegetables and sweets are part of the meal. Coconut is used in many dishes, and the taste is rich and fresh. The songs, the prayers and the shared meal make a Goan Hindu wedding warm and full of meaning.
