The Land and the People

Kutchi weddings are held in Kutch, in the western part of Gujarat. Places like Bhuj, Mandvi and Anjar are part of this area. Kutch is a land of white salt deserts, colourful villages and rich art. Every year, a big festival called Rann Utsav is held there.

Many Kutchi families live in Mumbai and in other countries. Hindu, Jain and Muslim communities in Kutch all have their own wedding customs. Kutchi weddings are known for their rich embroidery and warm hospitality. The embroidery is a famous art form, and it is used in the wedding dress, the home decor and the gifts.

How Long the Wedding Lasts

A Kutchi wedding usually takes two to four days. Some families begin small functions a week before. The days are full of visits, songs and family meals. The main wedding day is the peak of the celebration.

Before the Wedding

The wedding begins with a formal engagement and a family gathering. The families meet, exchange gifts and share sweets. The elders bless the couple. A date is fixed by a priest or by an elder of the family.

In Mameru, the maternal uncle’s family brings gifts for the bride or groom. The gifts include clothes, jewelry, sweets and money. It is a grand event and the uncle’s family arrives with music. The family sings songs of joy. This ritual shows the love of the mother’s family.

Pithi is applied to the bride and groom in their homes. Turmeric paste is applied by the women of the family. Mehndi and Garba nights are held with music. The bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna. In Garba, the guests dance in circles. The nights are bright and full of joy.

The Wedding Day

On the wedding day, the groom arrives in a Barat, and the bride’s family welcomes him. The Barat comes with music and dance. The bride’s family stands at the door with flowers and a lamp. The groom is greeted with a tilak.

In a Hindu wedding, the couple exchanges garlands, and the priest performs Kanyadaan and the seven steps around the holy fire. The couple takes their vows, and the elders bless them. In a Muslim wedding, the Nikah is read by a religious leader. The couple agrees to marry in front of the witnesses, and the groom promises the Mahr. The families then share a big feast.

Clothes and Jewelry

The bride’s dress often has mirror work and fine Kutchi embroidery. The mirrors shine in the light and make the dress sparkle. The embroidery is done by hand, and it may take many months to finish. She wears heavy silver jewelry. Silver is loved in Kutch, and many women wear large silver necklaces, bangles and anklets. The groom wears a kurta with a turban or a sherwani.

Food, Music and Fun

The feast can include khichdi, kadhi, bajra rotla and sweets. Khichdi is a simple dish made of rice and lentils, and it is served with ghee. Kadhi is a sour curd curry. Dabeli, a famous snack from Kutch, is loved by many guests. It is a spicy potato filling in a bun, topped with peanuts and pomegranate seeds. The music is folk music with drums and songs. A Kutchi wedding is colourful and full of art, food and friendly people.
