The Land and the People
The Bohra wedding is held by the Bohra Muslim community. Bohras live mainly in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Many also live in cities like Mumbai, Surat and Udaipur, and in other countries. The Dawoodi Bohra group is the largest group of Bohras. They are known for their business skills, their close community and their love of good food.
Their weddings follow Islamic customs along with community traditions. The community is close, and the wedding is often a happy meeting of many relatives and friends. The wedding is simple in its main ceremony, but the feasts and the family gatherings make it a rich event.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A Bohra wedding usually takes two to three days. The main ceremony is often held in a single day. Before that, there are small functions for the families. After the ceremony, there is a big feast, and the families celebrate together.
Before the Wedding
The wedding process begins when the families agree on the match. Both families talk about the boy and the girl, their education, their homes and their values. When everyone agrees, the families move ahead with the plan. A small engagement function follows, where gifts and sweets are exchanged. The families meet, share a meal and pray together.
Before the wedding, women of the family gather for a Mehndi function with songs and food. The bride and the women of the family apply henna on their hands and feet. The room is filled with laughter and songs. The women share sweets and stories, and the bride is teased and blessed by her friends and relatives.
The Wedding Day
The main ceremony is the Nikah, where the couple agrees to marry in front of witnesses. The Nikah is a simple and holy ceremony. The bride and groom each say that they accept the marriage of their own free will. The witnesses listen and sign the papers.
A religious leader reads prayers and blessings during the Nikah. He may also give advice to the couple about how to live together in peace and respect. The words of the prayer are read slowly, and the guests listen with care.
The groom promises a gift for the bride, called Mahr. It is a sign of respect for the bride and a promise of care. The Mahr belongs to the bride, and she can use it as she wishes. After the Nikah, the families greet each other, and a big feast is held for the guests.
Clothes and Jewelry
Men wear white clothes with a gold-trimmed cap. The cap is a special sign of the Bohra community, and it looks neat and graceful. Women wear a colourful two-piece dress called Rida. The Rida is made of bright cloth with fine work on it. It is a proud part of the Bohra dress. The bride wears a beautiful dress and gold jewelry for her wedding.
Food, Music and Fun
Bohra guests often eat together from a large shared platter called a Thaal. Several people sit around the Thaal and eat from the same plate. This is a sign of sharing and love. The meal often starts with a little salt and a sweet dish. It is followed by many different dishes, such as rice, meat, vegetables and sweets. The Thaal is a special part of Bohra culture, and it shows the deep love of the community for togetherness.
