The people speak Dogri and follow Hindu customs. They are known for being brave, simple and kind. The Dogras also have a proud history of soldiers who served the country with honour. Dogra weddings have a simple, warm and family-centered feel. Relatives, neighbours and friends all come together to bless the couple.

How Long the Wedding Lasts

A Dogra wedding usually takes three to five days. The main rituals are held on the last two days. The earlier days are for small functions, songs and family meals. The whole house is busy, and the rooms are filled with guests.

Before the Wedding

The wedding begins with a formal engagement, and the families exchange gifts and sweets. The elders of both families sit together and agree on the date. A priest is often asked to choose a good time for the wedding. After the engagement, the news is shared with all relatives, and everyone begins to prepare.

Haldi and Mehndi are held at both homes with songs and dance. The bride and groom are rubbed with turmeric paste in their own homes. The bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna. The women of the family gather in the evening, and they sing and dance late into the night.

Women sing traditional Dogri wedding songs. These songs are old and have been passed down from mother to daughter. Some songs are for blessing the bride and groom. Some songs are for teasing the groom’s family. The songs give the wedding its special flavour, and they are sung with great joy.

The Wedding Day

On the wedding day, the groom comes in a Barat, and the bride’s family welcomes him at the door. The Barat moves with music, and the groom’s relatives and friends dance on the way. The bride’s family greets each guest with warm words and gives them seats. The groom is greeted with a tilak and a small puja.

The couple exchanges garlands in the Jaimala. This is a happy moment, and the guests clap and cheer. The priest then chants Vedic mantras during Kanyadaan and the pheras around the sacred fire. Kanyadaan is the giving away of the bride by her father. In the pheras, the couple walks around the fire, and each round has a meaning.

The groom applies sindoor to the bride’s forehead. This is a sign that she is now a married woman. The bride then says goodbye in the Vidai ceremony. This is a very emotional time, and the bride’s family and friends often cry. She leaves for her new home with blessings.

Clothes and Jewelry

The bride often wears a red lehenga or a red salwar suit. The dress is decorated with gold thread and pretty stones. She wears gold jewelry, including a necklace, earrings and bangles. The groom wears a sherwani or a kurta with a turban. The dress is simple and neat.

Food, Music and Fun

The families serve a traditional feast called Dham, made by special cooks. Dham is a meal that is cooked in big pots, and the cooks are called Wazas. Guests sit on the floor in rows and eat from leaf plates. Dham has rice, rajma, dal and a sweet dish. The taste is rich and the food is served warm. The whole meal is a joy to eat, and guests often ask for more. The music and dance are lively, and the songs keep the mood cheerful. A Dogra wedding is a simple and warm event, full of love and good food.
