The Land and the People
Nair weddings are held by the Nair community of Kerala. They take place in temples, halls and family homes in cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. Kerala is a land of backwaters, green hills and coconut palms. The Nairs have a long history in Kerala, and many of them were once warriors, landlords and officers.
Many Nair families also live in other cities and abroad. In the past, Nair families followed a matrilineal system, where the family line passed through the mother. The family home was called a Tharavad, and it was a large house where many relatives lived together. Today, the wedding is simple, holy and short. The community has changed with time, but it still keeps many old customs alive.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
The main wedding is usually held in one day and takes about an hour. Small functions before and after can add one or two days. The ceremony begins at a lucky time, and it is finished quickly. The feast is a big part of the day, and the guests stay to enjoy it.
Before the Wedding
The wedding starts with Pennukaanal, when the groom’s family visits the bride’s home. The word means seeing the girl. The groom and his family meet the bride and her family. They talk, drink tea and share snacks. It is a polite and friendly meeting, and both sides get to know each other.
The families then agree on the match in a function called Nischayam. Gifts and sweets are exchanged, and the elders bless the couple. The families also check the horoscopes of the two. A priest picks a lucky time, called the Muhurtham. The date and the time are chosen with great care, as the tying of the Thali must be done at the exact moment.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, a lit lamp called a Nilavilakku is placed before the couple. The lamp is a symbol of light and prosperity. It is a tall brass lamp, and it stays lit throughout the ceremony. Elders and relatives gather around. The priest says a short prayer, and the ceremony begins.
The groom gives the bride a new sari in Pudava Kodukkal. It is a sign that he will look after her. The bride accepts the gift and wears it later. He then ties the Thali around her neck. The Thali is a gold pendant, and it is the main symbol of marriage. The nadaswaram and the drums play at this moment. The sound rises, and the guests bless the couple.
The couple exchanges garlands and joins hands in front of the priest and the elders. The elders bless them with flowers and rice. The couple takes the blessings of the elders by touching their feet. The wedding is simple, and every step has meaning.
After the wedding, the bride is welcomed into the groom’s home. The groom’s mother greets her with a lamp and a plate of rice. The bride steps in with her right foot. The family gives her sweets and milk. She begins her new life with love and blessings.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride wears a Kasavu sari, which is cream and gold. The sari is made of fine cotton with a gold border. It is simple and graceful. She wears gold jewelry, such as a necklace, earrings and bangles. Fresh jasmine flowers are worn in her hair. The groom wears a mundu and a shirt. The mundu is a white cloth with a gold border. The dress is simple and neat.
Food, Music and Fun
A grand feast, called a Sadya, is served on a banana leaf. It has many dishes, such as rice, sambar, avial, thoran, pickles, papad and banana chips. Each dish has its own place on the leaf. The meal ends with sweet Payasam. Everyone sits on the floor or at long tables, and the servers bring the dishes one by one. The wedding is full of blessings from elders and family. The music is soft, and the mood is calm and holy. A Nair wedding is short and simple, but it is full of love and meaning.
