The Land and the People
Awadhi weddings are held in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. This region includes cities like Lucknow, Ayodhya, Faizabad, Sultanpur and Barabanki. Awadh has a long and rich history. It is known for its poetry, its music, its fine manners and its famous food. Lucknow, the city of nawabs, is the best-known city of the region.
The people of Awadh speak Awadhi and Hindi. They are known for a style of speaking that is sweet and polite. People say that in Awadh, even an argument is held with good manners. This graceful style can be seen in every part of an Awadhi wedding. Awadhi weddings follow North Indian Hindu customs, but they have a soft and gentle feel.
How Long the Wedding Lasts
A traditional Awadhi wedding takes about three to five days. The rituals begin a few days before the main wedding day. The house slowly fills with relatives, and every day has a small function. By the time of the main wedding, the whole family is together and full of joy.
Before the Wedding
The Tilak ceremony is held first. In this ceremony, the bride’s family visits the groom’s home. The bride’s brother or other male relatives apply a tilak, which is a mark of red or yellow paste, on the groom’s forehead. They also bring gifts, sweets and fruits. This ceremony shows that the families have agreed on the match.
After this, Haldi and Mehndi are held for the bride and the groom in their own homes. In Haldi, turmeric paste is applied to the skin to make it glow. In Mehndi, beautiful designs are drawn on the hands of the bride with henna. The women of the house sing folk songs on these days. Some songs are for blessings, and some are just for fun. The women sit together, eat sweets and dance in the courtyard.
The Wedding Day
On the wedding day, the groom arrives in a Barat. The Barat is the wedding procession of the groom’s family and friends. It comes with music and dance. The groom may ride a decorated horse or travel in a car. The band plays lively tunes, and the guests dance in the street.
The bride’s family welcomes the groom at the door in a ritual called Dwar Puja. The bride’s parents greet the groom with a small puja and put a tilak on his forehead. After that, the couple exchanges garlands. This is a happy moment, and friends often lift the bride and groom in a playful way.
Then the priest performs Kanyadaan and the pheras around the holy fire. In Kanyadaan, the bride’s parents give away their daughter with blessings. In the pheras, the couple walks around the fire, and each round has a meaning and a promise. Sindoor Daan follows, and the groom applies red sindoor on the bride’s hair parting. This shows that she is now a married woman. After all the rituals, the bride says goodbye in the Vidai ceremony. This is an emotional time, as the bride leaves her parents’ home to begin her new life.
Clothes and Jewelry
The bride usually wears a red sari or a lehenga with gold jewelry. Many brides also wear clothes with fine hand work, which is a special art of Lucknow. The groom wears a sherwani, and often a turban, on the wedding day. Both the bride and groom look rich and graceful in their wedding dress.
Food, Music and Fun
Women from the bride’s side often sing funny songs, called Gaari, to tease the groom’s family. These songs are sung in a playful way, and no one takes offence. The groom’s family enjoys the teasing and smiles.
The wedding meal is simple and tasty, with puri, vegetables and many sweets. Awadhi hospitality is famous, so guests are treated with great respect. Every guest is greeted with warm words and served with care. The hosts make sure that no one leaves hungry or unhappy. This spirit of kindness is the true beauty of an Awadhi wedding.
